WASHINGTON (Sept. 27, 2005)–“Windows on Literacy: Math in the Content Areas,” part of National Geographic’s nonfiction literacy program, has been given a 2006 Teachers Choice Award by Learning magazine. Seventy teacher teams from across the United States evaluated more than 430 products as part of the 12th annual Teachers Choice Awards.
“We are extraordinarily proud to receive this award, especially since it was evaluated by teachers in the classroom,” said Ericka Markman, president of the Society’s School Publishing division. “Our goal is always to develop products that make the teaching of literacy as straightforward for teachers and exciting for students as possible, and ‘Math in the Content Areas’ is a perfect example of the melding of effective teaching strategies with engaging content.”
The “Windows on Literacy” program gives young readers the opportunity to explore their interests as they increase their appreciation for books as a source of knowledge. The program integrates key science, social studies and mathematics concepts outlined in the national standards for grades Pre-K to 3 while it helps teachers develop the literacy skills that students need to read and write nonfiction.
“Windows on Literacy: Math in the Content Areas” is composed of 64 “Math in Science” and “Math in Social Studies” titles that build reading skills as they reinforce math concepts and language. Students make real-world connections for math learning. The program is carefully leveled to meet the needs of beginning through fluent readers and includes extensive teacher support materials that address cross-curricular teaching strategies.
In January 2006, National Geographic School Publishing will launch a new product that will expand its “Windows on Literacy” program to include student and teacher materials specifically designed to help English-language learners and students who need additional reading support. Called “Windows on Literacy: Language, Literacy & Vocabulary,” this new program will also include math, social studies and science series.
