Continuing International Expansion, National Geographic Teams with Leading Italian Publisher Gruppo Editoriale L’Espresso, Publisher of National Geographic Magazine in Italy And Distributor of National Geographic Home Entertainment Products
WASHINGTON/ROME, Italy (April 29, 2010)—National Geographic Digital Media (NGDM) today announced that National Geographic is expanding its global reach to the Italian audience by launching an Italian-language version of its award-winning website at Nationalgeographic.it in May. Italian users will be able to easily explore the online world of National Geographic, enjoying interactive features, captivating images and world-renowned news content in their own language.
National Geographic teamed with Gruppo Editoriale L’Espresso, publisher of the Italian edition of National Geographic magazine since it launched in 1998 and distributor of National Geographic Home Entertainment products since 2000, to create the new Italian-based website. The new site will be promoted by and fully integrated into the magazine operations, and Gruppo Espresso will lead advertising sales for the website and create local distribution partnerships.
Building on National Geographic’s reputation as the leader in visual storytelling, National Geographic’s Italian website is modeled after the U.S. version but localized for the Italian audience. Translations of U.S. website content, as well as the production of local content by Gruppo Espresso’s editorial staff, will create a relevant consumer experience for an Italian version of popular subject areas, including wildlife, environment, photography, travel, science, news and events. The Italian audience also will have access to information on countries and cultures around the globe. Interactive features will offer opportunities for visitors to enjoy multimedia content. The site also will host blogs by prominent Italian environment experts, such as Fulco Pratesi, founder and honorary president of WWF Italia.
“The launch of the Italian-language site continues our commitment to expand the National Geographic brand globally on the Web as we make our one-of-a-kind content available to markets around the world,” said John Caldwell, president, NGDM. “As Italy’s leading news distributor and publisher of the Italian edition of National Geographic magazine, Gruppo Espresso is the ideal partner in this venture that supports the National Geographic Society’s mission of inspiring people to care about the planet.”
“With over 17 million monthly unique users on Repubblica.it and 20 million unique users on the Group’s more than 50 websites, L’Espresso is an established leader in online information in Italy,” said Corrado Corradi, general manager of L’Espresso division of Gruppo Espresso. “Nationalgeographic.it is an ideal addition to L’Espresso Group’s network, and our team looks forward to building the National Geographic brand online.”
The new website further enriches the National Geographic multimedia and interactive brand experience in Italy that already includes the innovative programming of the National Geographic Channel, National Geographic Channel HD, Nat Geo WILD, Nat Geo Adventure and Nat Geo Music. Nationalgeographic.it will link to the National Geographic Channel Italy website.
Localized National Geographic websites also are available in Japan, China, the United Kingdom, Australia and India. NGDM plans to launch other localized websites this year.
