WASHINGTON (April 12, 2011)—To help inspire kids to learn more about the world around them, National Geographic and Pottery Barn Kids are teaming up to create a dynamic new program featuring educational content, activities and merchandise that will excite and engage kids and their parents. This new adventure launches April 21 at Pottery Barn Kids — in-store, online and in the catalog.
Drawing on National Geographic’s expertise in the fields of science, exploration, nature and wildlife, the program will feature amazing fun facts, games, activities and live events that will spark kids’ imaginations and natural curiosity. Kids will also have unique access to National Geographic explorers and photographers through informational videos on potterybarnkids.com.
Pottery Barn Kids will offer a collection of National Geographic-inspired products, with National Geographic’s net proceeds going to support vital ocean exploration, conservation, research and education programs.
“At National Geographic, our mission is to inspire people of all ages to care about the planet. Through our relationship with Pottery Barn Kids, we hope to encourage an enduring curiosity for knowledge and exploration,” said Krista Newberry, vice president of National Geographic Licensing. “We’re looking forward to working with Pottery Barn Kids to develop programs and products that will speak to their customers and help parents and families forge a deeper connection to the world around them.”
“Like so many today, I grew up with National Geographic, and it is a true honor to be partnering with one of the world’s largest scientific and educational organizations,” said Janet Hayes, president, Pottery Barn Kids. “This is the first time Pottery Barn Kids has partnered with an organization like National Geographic, and we are excited to utilize all of the wonderful resources and opportunities they have to educate kids and their parents about our planet.”
The partnership will launch with a focus on the wonders of the ocean and marine life. In addition to seasonal features, the program will include a sweepstakes for a 10-day National Geographic Expeditions family trip for four to the Galápagos Islands aboard the National Geographic Endeavour, provided by National Geographic Expeditions and Pottery Barn Kids. Rules and entry form can be found at www.potterybarnkids.com/adventure.
Pottery Barn Kids will also introduce the National Geographic “Little Explorers Club,” a program that will bring the science museum experience to all Pottery Barn Kids stores across the United States and Canada with hands-on activities, quizzes, songs and more. Designed for kids ages three and up, these complimentary events will begin Saturday, April 30, and continue throughout the year. Kids will earn a special participation badge for each event they attend.
