WASHINGTON (March 27, 2012)—In September 1985, 73 years after the Titanic sank in the North Atlantic, Dr. Robert Ballard made history when he located the wreck nearly two-and-a-half miles beneath the ocean surface, using National Geographic Society-designed technologies. A series of magazine features and television specials followed, documenting Ballard’s journey. To mark the 100th anniversary of the sinking of the Titanic in April 1912, National Geographic Home Entertainment is releasing a special collection of Titanic programming. The “Secrets of the Titanic” Anniversary Collection will be available on DVD Tuesday, April 10, 2012, for $19.97 (SRP), on shopNG.com, in stores where videos are sold or by calling (800) 437-5521.
The Anniversary Collection pairs a new special “Save the Titanic with Bob Ballard,” premiering Monday, April 9, on the National Geographic Channel with the classic film “Secrets of the Titanic.”
“Secrets of the Titanic” reveals the spectacular original images and on-location footage captured of the legendary shipwreck. In “Save the Titanic with Bob Ballard,” Ballard revisits the ship in an entirely different way — from the perspective of those who set sail on her 100 years ago. Traveling to the shipyards of Northern Ireland to retrace the path of the doomed ship from her very incarnation, Ballard is driven by one question throughout his journey — will the Titanic survive another 100 years? As evidence mounts that the ship is under siege by natural forces, careless visitors and even rogue salvage operators, the man who found her teams up with the families of victims and survivors to protect the legacy of history’s most famous ship.
The “Secrets of the Titanic” Anniversary Collection also includes the bonus program “Last Hours of the Titanic, Behind-the-Scenes,” as well as a photo gallery, a Titanic route map, a profile of Ballard and a trivia quiz.
National Geographic Channel will mark the 100th anniversary of the ship’s sinking with two world-premiere films featuring “Titanic” filmmaker James Cameron and Ballard: “Titanic: The Final Word with James Cameron” and “Save the Titanic with Bob Ballard.” Both Cameron and Ballard are National Geographic Explorers-in-Residence. “Titanic: The Final Word with James Cameron” assembles the world’s leading Titanic experts for the ultimate forensic investigation into the science behind what sank the “unsinkable” ship on her maiden voyage. Both films will premiere in a two-night Titanic event, with “Titanic: The Final Word with James Cameron” airing on Sunday, April 8, and “Save the Titanic with Bob Ballard” airing the following night.
In addition, National Geographic will commemorate the anniversary with a robust online hub; an eBook offering dramatic new insights into the disaster; a children’s book; apps; a new online game “Titanic: Unsolved Mystery”; a lecture by Ballard at National Society headquarters on Tuesday, April 10; and a new map detailing the ship’s route and wreck site and featuring diagrams, photos and information on the ship, its passengers and history.
National Geographic Home Entertainment titles are distributed to the retail marketplace through Vivendi Entertainment.
