DANIEL EDELSON JOINS NATIONAL GEOGRAPHIC AS VICE PRESIDENT, EDUCATION AND CHILDREN'S PROGRAMS
WASHINGTON (Dec. 4, 2007)—Daniel Edelson has joined National Geographic as vice president for Education and Children's Programs and executive director of the Society's Education Foundation.
Edelson had been associate professor of learning sciences and computer science at Northwestern University since 2001. Through his research on reform of earth and environmental science education, he has made significant contributions to the fields of instructional design, learning technologies and teacher development. Edelson is the author of highly regarded geography software and inquiry-based geoscience textbooks for middle and high school. In addition, he has received numerous grants from the National Science Foundation and private foundations and has published articles on educational reform in a wide range of academic journals and books.
"Daniel is an acknowledged leader in the education world, with a deep enthusiasm and commitment to improving geographic literacy. We are fortunate to have him heading National Geographic's educational outreach programs," said Terry Garcia, executive vice president, Mission Programs.
To motivate and enable new generations of children to be geographically literate, National Geographic's Education and Children's Programs provides programs that offer geography learning opportunities for young people in and out of the classroom, online resources for students and teachers, and national teacher training. It also supports a grassroots network of state teacher alliances. The National Geographic Bee, a nationwide contest, attracts nearly 5 million fourth- through eighth-graders each year. The National Geographic Education Foundation, launched in 1988 by then Society President Gilbert M. Grosvenor, has dispersed more than $75 million in grants for innovative educational programs.
