WASHINGTON (June 5, 2007)–National Geographic, in collaboration with leading outdoor products company New Creative, has developed a line of high-quality birding products to debut this summer at the Dallas International Gift & Home Accessories Market and the Atlanta International Gift & Home Furnishing Show. The line, which consists of houses, feeders and baths, serves to further the National Geographic Society’s core endeavors of wildlife education and conservation. Net proceeds from the sales of National Geographic’s birding products will support vital conservation, research and education programs.
Birding is the fastest growing wildlife-related outdoor activity in the United States with 80 million birders and an estimated 1 million new participants each year. The National Geographic birding product line is designed to meet the needs of this growing pastime and was developed with the guidance of some of the most respected ornithologists, conservationists, researchers and everyday birding enthusiasts.
“Our goal was to create a line of outdoor birding products that is both aesthetically pleasing and authentic,” said Krista Newberry, vice president of licensing, home furnishings, for National Geographic. “Collaborating with birding experts, including our own National Geographic ornithologist Dr. George Watson, ensures that the product makes a positive contribution to wildlife while bringing the mystery and wonder of nature to people of all ages.”
“National Geographic’s knowledge of and dedication to wildlife is unrivaled,” said Benno Duenkelsbuehler, president of NCE, parent company of New Creative ™. “As a leader in outdoor living and nature products, we are very happy to partner with National Geographic.”
Inspired by the No. 1 best-selling book, “National Geographic Field Guide to the Birds of
North America,” the birding product line offers the ability to transform a backyard into a comfortable bird haven. Blue and green hues of glass and ceramic, reflecting the colors of nature, combine with designs that bring the book’s illustrations to life and complement any outdoor setting. Included with each product is educational information, with feeding tips by Watson as well as excerpts from “National Geographic Field Guide to the Birds of North America.”
National Geographic also offers a variety of other birding products, including interactive birding software such as Handheld Birds by PullUIn; a line of optics by Citiwell to help identify the birds that populate backyard habitats; bird publications by National Geographic books; and bird habitat live plants by Floragem.
