WASHINGTON (Oct. 13, 2010)—In recognition of International Paper’s considerable efforts toward improving the quality of geography education in the nation’s schools, National Geographic will present the company with the Society’s Chairman’s Award on Wednesday, Oct. 13, 2010.
The award, “for significantly advancing knowledge of the world and all that is in it,” is given to individuals and organizations for outstanding leadership in education, conservation and wildlife management programs. The award will be presented in Washington, D.C., by National Geographic Chairman Gilbert M. Grosvenor to International Paper Chairman and CEO John Faraci.
International Paper has supported National Geographic’s focus on environmental education and literacy efforts since 1997; to date, its contributions to those initiatives total more than $5 million. In 1997 and 1998, International Paper funded National Geographic’s Geography Action! program, which provides classroom resources to geography educators, and a teacher training program. In 2000, the company made two contributions toward the creation of the online MapMachine on NationalGeographic.com. From 2001 to 2009, International Paper was the primary sponsor of the classroom magazines National Geographic Explorer, Young Explorer and Extreme Explorer. Its contribution allowed the magazines to keep their subscription costs as low as possible, thereby reaching an audience of some 2.5 million schoolchildren. An additional annual grant from International Paper paid for subscriptions for students in mainly rural schools close to International Paper’s facilities around the country.
Furthermore, through access to lands in the company’s stewardship, National Geographic Explorer magazines were able to present stories to their readers on such little-known treasures as Alabama’s Red Hills salamander and Cactus Hill, the earliest Native American archaeological site, in Virginia.

Its support allowed the Explorer magazines to become the fastest-growing classroom magazines in the country. International Paper’s commitment is particularly valued in times when schools are much more likely to experience cuts than generous grants to help them fulfill their missions.”

Previous recipients of the National Geographic Chairman’s Award include Canon Inc., The Phil Hardin Foundation, National Railroad Passenger Corporation, Westvaco Corporation, Bell Atlantic Corporation, Chesapeake Bay Foundation, Lady Bird Johnson, Laurance Rockefeller and Richard Goldman. The award was last given to Alex Trebek, moderator of the National Geographic Bee, in May 2008.
