WASHINGTON/MADRID (Oct. 19, 2010)—Continuing to expand its global reach, National Geographic Digital Media (NGDM) today announced the launch of a Spanish-language version of the award-winning National Geographic website at www.NationalGeographic.es. The new site allows Spanish Web users to easily explore National Geographic’s online world — finding interactive features, captivating images and information about mission programs — in their native language.
NGDM teamed with National Geographic Channel (NGC) in Spain to create the new Spanish-language website. Through its strategic partnership with NGC Spain, the leading Spanish Web portal and Internet service provider Terra Networks — part of the Telefónica Group that serves 17 million Web users in Spain — will feature National Geographic content and provide easy access to www.NationalGeographic.es from its home page.
Building on National Geographic’s reputation as the leader in visual storytelling, National Geographic’s Spanish website is modeled after the U.S. design in look and feel. This localized version of the U.S. website’s features creates a content-rich consumer experience in popular subject areas including animals, scientific news, the environment, photography, travel and cultures. More than 200 National Geographic videos are available in Spanish, and key mission programs — such as Great Migrations, Big Cats Initiative and The Ocean — are presented as part of the site’s effort to inspire people to care about the planet. Interactive features offer users the opportunity to enjoy multimedia content. Capturing the world in a universal language that needs no translation, National Geographic’s renowned photo collection features “Photo of the Day,” themed galleries and downloadable wallpapers. In coming months, the site will include locally developed content from NGC Spain.
“The launch of NationalGeographic.es continues our commitment to creating engaging digital experiences for consumers around the world,” said John Caldwell, president, NGDM. “The development of a local-language version of NationalGeographic.com for the Spanish market builds on our television partnership with NGC Spain, expanding our reach to audiences by dramatically increasing the amount of digital content accessible on the National Geographic website, NationalGeographic.es.”
“I am happy to announce that, through our collaboration with the National Geographic Society, we are strengthening the Spanish National Geographic website with content personalized for the Spanish audience,” said Jesús Perezagua, president, Fox International Channels Europe. “This step not only reinforces the strong presence of National Geographic in the Spanish market, but also shows the significance of Spanish consumers on the global level. The development of the website was done under Fox International Channels’ Digital Media department in Spain. This website will be an asset in promoting not only National Geographic Web content but also in cross-promoting all National Geographic television channels, products and services on the Internet.”
The new website further enriches the National Geographic multimedia and interactive brand experience in Spain that already includes the innovative programming of the television channels distributed in Spain: National Geographic Channel and National Geographic Channel HD.
NGC Spain will work closely with RBA Revistas — longtime National Geographic partner and publisher of Spain’s edition of National Geographic magazine as well as National Geographic Viajes, the leading travel publication, and National Geographic Historia, the leading history magazine — to promote the Society’s magazines, books and DVDs. RBA will continue to offer magazine-specific Web content in Spain through its existing site. National Geographic Kids magazine in Spain is published by Panini Revistas.
National Geographic websites also are available in Italy, Japan, China, the United Kingdom, Australia and India.
