WASHINGTON (April 19, 2012)—Launching today on the App Store is National Geographic’s newest mobile application for iPhone, “National Parks by National Geographic.” Coinciding with National Park Week, April 21-29, during which all of America’s 397 national parks will offer free admission, the app will provide users the ultimate utility in planning their next park vacation. The app, sponsored by Canon, is free, with additional content available for in-app purchase.
“National Parks by National Geographic,” developed and designed with Rally Interactive, features robust guides for the 20 most visited parks, with plans to roll out more in the future. For each park, the app’s free content provides general park information, including travel tips, contact and entry information, park rules, recent tweets, current weather and special advisories. Photo galleries for each park, compiled both from National Geographic’s rich archives and user-submitted images, bring each of the parks’ most scenic spots to life. Photo tips from Michael Melford, who has photographed many national park stories for National Geographic magazine, give users the tools they need to shoot like a pro. In the user hub, travelers will find picks from National Geographic editors of their favorite hikes and activities, park news and related events, including Canon-sponsored photo workshops around the country. Detailed maps allow users to locate park points of interest, filter them by activity and seasonality, get directions from their current location, add them to a customized park itinerary or a list of favorites, or share the information on their social networks. Visiting a park also earns users a customized “stamp” that is stored in their user hub and can also be shared socially.
Expanded park guides can be purchased in-app, ranging from 99 cents to $1.99, with the first guide free. The additional content in these guides includes unique photo hotspots written by a world-class photographer with tips for capturing the same photo yourself; exclusive park secrets and fun facts; and an expanded list of must-do activities and must-see sights.
Also available from National Geographic on the App Store is “National Park Maps HD” ($3.99), an award-winning app for iPhone, iPad and iPod Touch, which features trail maps for 20 top U.S. parks.
National Park Week, presented by the National Park Service and the National Park Foundation, encourages people across the country to enjoy, explore, learn, share and give back to America’s nearly 400 national parks.
