WHAT: Teams of students from the United States, Canada and India have qualified for the final round of the National Geographic World Championship to be held at Russian Geographical Society headquarters in St. Petersburg, Russia, on Wednesday July 31. Alex Trebek, host of the U.S. television quiz show “Jeopardy!”, will moderate the finals. A total of 18 international teams took part in two preliminary activities on Sunday and Monday. The United States, Canada and India gained the highest scores in these earlier rounds. Wednesday’s finals will begin at 10:30 a.m. MSK (2:30 a.m. ET).
The National Geographic Society developed the annual National Geographic Bee in 1989 and the biennial National Geographic World Championship in 1993 in response to concern about the lack of geographic knowledge among young people in the United States. Google is the sponsor of the 2013 World Championship.
